Modulisme Session 031 und 032: Illusion of Safety (US) und Ian Boddy (UK)

From 1983-2015, and resurrected in 2020, Illusion of Safety has been the ongoing project of US-American Daniel Burke working solo and with many collaborators. It began after Burke drew from industrial music pioneers’ group Throbbing Gristle’s farewell concerts in San Francisco a.o. the impetus to make sound his vehicle for confrontation, self-discovery, connection, and transcendence.
Releasing over 30 full length albums, tapes, and CD’s on labels such as Staalplaat, Soleilmoon, Korm Plastics, Experimedia and Waystyx. Performing over 300 live concerts throughout Europe and the U.S.
Burke’s work has been called ambient, post-industrial, noise, electro-acoustic, sound collage, improvisation, and power electronics, but they have been unwilling to limit their work to any given style or method. The sonic character and affective substance of the music will often shift abruptly within each recording and live performance. One of the true innovators of sonic disturbances.

Ian Boddy got into composing music in the late 70s in Newcastle upon Tyne. Having fallen in love with the sound worlds of German electronic bands such as Tangerine Dream, he came across an arts centre that housed a studio with reel-to-reel tape machines and analogue synthesisers. Boddy, then, taught himself how to use this equipment through a process of experimentation.
From the mid 1980s till 2003 he worked at various roles in the music industry including a 12 year stint in sales with Akai UK.
He performed at many concerts and festivals in the UK, Germany, The Netherlands and USA. He also established contacts with sample CD companies such as Zero-G and the library music company DeWolfe.
Boddy set up the DiN label in 1999 and then in 2003 left Akai to pursue his musical career full time.
Since then he has continued to release library music albums for several companies with tracks used on many TV shows, documentaries and films. His sound design skills have been in high demand with sound packs and virtual instruments released via companies such as Zero-G, Apple and Soniccouture.
DiN has become one of the most respected independent electronic music labels in the world with 65 CD releases as well as 25 digital and the creation of the Tone Science sub-label which showcases artists working with modular synths. This latter series now has 4 volumes released and has been very well received in the modular community.
